Beta2 of the next release of HPC Server --- i.e. "Windows HPC Server 2008 R2" --- was just released last friday on 26 March 2010. Members of the beta program can download from Microsoft Connect; to join the beta program, surf here. I'm downloading now, but from what I've heard so far, Beta2:
- extends the SOA model with additional functionality (broker node failover, fire-and-forget, easier programming model)
- supports offloading of Excel 2010 spreadsheet calculations onto the cluster
- offers workstation-based cycle-stealing (windows 7 only?)
- provides pre and post job tasks for job prep and cleanup
- new task types and service-aware scheduling
- offers numerous IT advantages (iSCSI boot, remote head node SQL Server database, extensible diagnostics and heat map)
Some Beta2 release notes can be found here, and here. More soon!
