Windows Vista has problems copying large files

I've heard quite a few people complain about the new copying mechanism in Vista but I just chocked them up as anti-MS winers. Well recently it bit me personally. I've been connecting to a remote network trying to download large files with no success -- Vista simply chokes a ways into the copy process saying "network location no longer available" or something to that effect. Well, sorry Vista, but the network is still available, it's you with the problem. I switched to an XP box (had to borrow my wife's laptop since all of my boxes are running Vista now) and everything worked in a snap. Makes me feel great about upgrading!

I find that the whole update to the common shell file operations (because it seems that's where the damage was done) was not good.

It is now slower, takes longer to start, and craps out in the middle. And deleting files doesn't work very well either because many times the new many previews that explorer tries to generate from files (for the bottom bar, the preview bar, drag and drop) end up locking the precise you want to delete/move.

There are many good features and a lot to like in Vista, but the new explorer ain't one of them.

BTW, next time you have trouble copying a file on vista, just drop to the command line and use robocopy instead. It will asve you a lot of grief.

I was actually using robocopy (my standard copy tool) when I experienced the problem. It only happened on large files -- robocopy would produce that error (network no longer available) a ways into the single-large-file copy. After scouring the Web a little, I determined that others were seeing the same problem so I've chalked-it-up as a bug related to Vista's copy mechanism.

I've had the same problem, but if I do XCopy/ROboCopy from the command-line it sees to work fine. It was failing in the UI so I am not sure why it was happening.

Like the others said: robocopy.

I use it extensivelly for copying large files (think MOSS VPC, Vista, Orcas etc) from trans-atlantic locations and it has been as solid as they come.

I know that doesn't help you, but I suspect the complaints you found on the web were for the UI route and I also suspect something else is at play with your particular scenario...

I have this problem too. I use a wireless connection. The same computer/equipment used to work fine with XP.

I'd be curious to see if hobocopy was any better than robocopy on Vista. If you have a few minutes, try it out and shoot me an email with the results. In theory it might work better, since it copies from a shadow volume.

Maybe Vista's built-in copy protection "feature" is seeing a picture of Mickey Mouse in your file: http://www.1729.com/blog/LookingForAWinWin.html

Im trying to backup a win 2003 server to a vista machine and it always says there is a problem with the network connection in the middle of backing up.
Worked fine when i was backing it up to windows XP.

This is a continuation of my previous post.
Apparently, it was the norton antivirus 2007 on my vista machine that was causing the transfer to stop midway. The report in norton showed a "MS RPCSS Attack (2)" in the WORM DETECTION.
So I disabled that particular worm signature and now it seems to be working fine in transfering large files.
Hope this helps.

i got the same problem and haven't found a good solution for it. i got a vista x64 workstation and a 2003 server which got this problem. my current solution is to rdp to the server and push the file to vista, that direction seems to work. but trying to get something from the server in vista doesn't work.

any1 found a solution yet?

iI found that having two recently bought intel 1gb pro cards (35 euro's) solved the problem, it seems that they can handle the new explorer receive window transfer code: http://www.tweakvista.eu/show_tweak.php?tweak=118

Teracopy solved my problems (Vista Ultimate, SP1). Weired that a third party tool should fix MS problems....

I'm having problems uploading a lot of image and OCR files from Vista desktop to Vista server. Robocopy isn't working. What works so far (and painfully slow) is to zip the directory, then extract all files to the server folder.

I have an other tip:  use terracopy (GOOOOD, urn as admin)  but also if you use a external HD format this one with clustersize of 1024kb.  smaller cluster size doesn't conflict with NTSF partition rules..
